School Transport: Road Safety: Parking

Students who live within three miles of Wadham make their own way to and from school. Those who use bicycles do so at their own risk and parents are asked to ensure that bicycles are safe to use and encourage their sons/daughters to take cycling proficiency courses.

Those students below the statutory leaving age who live over three miles from the school and within our "designated area" will be entitled to a place on a school bus, or a bus pass for use on public transport.

Post 16 students living over 5 miles away and travelling to Wadham by public transport will be able to buy a season ticket from the School at the subsidised price (rather than the full cost). Those who travel on contracted "school buses" will be billed by the Local Education Authority with the School paying the balance. Families who live over 5 miles from the School and who qualify for Income Support/Family Credit will not have to make any payment. (Note: There will be termly qualifying dates for this rebate scheme.) Those sixth formers who live within 5 miles of the School and who use a "spare" seat on a school contract bus will be charged £50 per term but those qualifying for Income Support will receive a one third rebate. If students living over 5 miles choose to apply for a petrol allowance the County will offer a subsidy of up to a maximum of 80p. per day for those living between 5 and 10 miles from Wadham and £1.30 per day for those living more than 10 miles from Wadham. These rates will be increased where families are in receipt of Income Support/Family Credit.

Students who are intending to apply for a bus pass or petrol allowance can obtain the relevant application form either from:

The Placement Section,
Pupil and Student Services,
Somerset Education Services,
County Hall,
Taunton,
TA1 4DY

or FROM THE SCHOOL OFFICE AT WADHAM.

It is especially important for the safety and convenience of everyone that those who travel by bus behave sensibly on those journeys. Bus operators may not tolerate bad conduct, and parents may be asked to accept full responsibility for their son's/daughter's conduct. In particular parents should note that our no-smoking rule extends to students queueing for their school bus as well as when on the bus itself.

Pauline Barker, the Area Field Officer in charge of transport, is responsible for the routes and timing of buses and can be contacted by phone at County Hall: Taunton 355683.

Road Safety

The A30 which runs past Wadham is a busy and potentially dangerous road and great care should be exercised by students arriving at and leaving the school.

Parking Facilities for Students' Vehicles

We have a very limited amount of parking space and specific permission is needed for students to bring a vehicle into school. Letters of request to drive a vehicle (car or motorcycle) to and from the school premises should go to the Year Head via the Form Tutor. No guarantee for the protection or safety of vehicles parked on the premises can be given and the School cannot be held responsible for any accident or damage to such vehicles.
