Admission to the SchoolEach school in Somerset serves a particular area and generally speaking Wadham serves the catchment areas of two Middle Schools: Swanmead in Ilminster and Maiden Beech in Crewkerne. Parents seeking a place for their son or daughter may however apply to Wadham, even if they do not live in our catchment area. Parental preference is agreed wherever possible. Where demand exceeds available places, preference is given to those students whose older brother or sister is already attending the School and to those who live nearest to the area served by the School. Parental choice is refused only when further admissions would, in terms of the 1980 Education Act 'prejudice efficient education or the efficient use of resources' i.e: would be to the detriment of those students already in that school. Even then, parents may make an appeal for a place at that school to the Schools Admissions Appeal Committee. Regarding the general admission from our area's two Middle Schools, we always arrange a visit towards the end of the Summer Term for those students who are transferring to Wadham. During the visit they are introduced to their future Year Head and senior students who will guide them about the school. Following this there is an evening meeting for parents of new students where "key" staff are introduced and the school is open for inspection. The dates of these meetings are arranged with the Middle Schools well in advance and are announced early in the year. |
